Plant Em' Green

Spending hours scrolling through pinterest for some interior design inspiration has been almost everyone’s guilty pleasure at some point in time. The trendy wall paint ideas and furniture styles have us daydreaming about how cool we could make our homes look. However, a lot of times the elements that these design inspos offer tend to neglect the damage you could cause to the environment by using toxic materials or by merely wasting something good just because it was out of trend.

Houseplants have become an iconic interior design phenomenon over the last decade. Everyone wants to give their homes a natural vibe with lush green ferns and bright succulents that adorn even a basic white wall while calming your mind; and more often than not-  giving you an uber cool background for your latest post on instagram.

While going au naturale with what you want, you can’t ignore how they would come. While planting greens is a step towards a greener and more sustainable future, planting them in plastic pots with chemical infused fertilizers could be such a bummer!

Using pots made with clay, a.k.a. chiknimitti, saves you the hassle of worrying about not being considerate enough towards the environment while giving you the liberty to choose from the evergreen brown pot that gives the boho-rustic-vintage look to an intricately designed fancy planter that could suit your home decor needs. These little pots serve their purpose not only as the green abodes they are, but also by doubling up as pen stands or a repository for your little knick knacks during their free time…. (during the season when plants are not potted inside them)

Another widely popular choice is cane. It’s simple. It’s subtle. It’s eco friendly. And it can be used to make the simplest of things look beyond gorgeous. Be it some simple weaves or detailed knots, cane planters always look so elegant while making your space look cozy.

The fact that these can be used equally adeptly- to slyly disguise the ‘aloo pyaaz ki tokri’ as a multi utility basket or provide for an organised container (and the secret to dodge mother dearest’s taunts) for your earrings that are scattered all over the place- is enough to prove that walking on this path of conserving nature and saving the environment is a wise one.

With an eye towards minimising the ill effect on the environment, plant a green, plant some hope. And when your little green grows out of its little green home with all the love that you shower it with, let the proud plant parent in you rejoice!
